I am only speaking from what I know there are different levels and degrees of Autism, your child might have low functioning level 8 I am not speaking of that.
I am speaking of Level 1 Autism High functioning The one thing I notice that they all have in common is social skills, communication and behavior these 3 adjectives are always used I see a lack in social skills, quite , being alone, and making the most of it, play alone , you almost think they have someone in the room with them, they dont know how to make friends, or when they do make a friend they don know how to keep one because there interest is fixated on 1 or 2 things and thats all they talk about or they dont get jokes or sarcasm and quickly whatever friend they made is gone , because that friend can tell something is wrong with them, but if that friend would just hang in there a little bit longer with the kid with level 1 autism they would know it gets better these kids want a friend, they wanna hang out with other kids which leads into communication for level 1 its not that they cant talk its like communication and social skills go together they go hand in there because they dont get funny things at first or jokes or tell a joke correctly at first makes it hard in the social area . Behavior well they do not break rules and mostly follow rules exz would be you dont need to worry about your child coming home late or drinking before the age of 21 but you do need to worry about them crossing the street even at 13 or 15 years old sometimes they dont want to try new things because they lack confidence in them selves they are afraid they will fail . What I do Praise, encouragement . make new experiences available for them to try, ask them what they wanna try , get them involved in planning activities anything even planning 1 meal for the week ,keep telling them your proud of them , hug them , I also use slang words ,throw sarcasm around , they will never know these words unless you teach them sounds crazy but my nephew comes up with some good ones every once in awhile that makes me laugh so hard. I teach life skills just things that you will need in life dishes, chores, using a screw driver , laundry using a check book, his personal items to keep id, social security cards and why you need these things , mostly everything I do I explain or he will ask if he doesn't understand the reason or the meaning behind it , You cant yell at a kid with level 1 they will cry easily I am not perfect I try very hard not to yell I try to slowly and calmly explain things ,have I yelled yes did he cry yes , great grades in school , so many other characteristic that are typical of a teenage boy asking about girls, sex, the future, getting a job , going to some type of secondary school after high school as he gets older characteristics he had before are fading away or improving but in some degree even lessened still there he doesn't stutter any more but sometimes takes him a min or 2 to give you a answer, and they learn differently he learns best with visuals and doing it over and over again he doesn't study all week for a test , which I made him do with arguing alot about studying every single day after school but me and his teacher spoke several times after he had a test one week he got 50 2nd test he got 88 took weeks and weeks to figure out why does he get a 50 then a 88 well my nephew was correct he does better on a test if he doesn't study sounds crazy but true so now he only study's on Thursday the night before a test , I am no expert I learn as I go and I can only do my best to get him the best and to set him up for a good job not sure what that will be yet, we know he likes food and computers or so we think as the next year rolls around I think we will have a better idea, I hope so next year I will need to dig around for certificate programs for people with disabilities, its no easy task it takes digging I know it will be payed for that I have found and I have that paper taped to my wall ,,,

I recently heard someone say on a video, I f you meet 1 person with autism then you have only met 1 person with autism, people say oh I know what it is but they really dont , Autism is characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. but you dont need to have all of these and they dont need to be severe everyone is different
.ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention estimated 1 out of 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. Most cases of autism, however, appear to be caused by a combination of autism risk genes and environmental factors influencing early brain development. Each individual with autism is unique. Many of those on the autism spectrum have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music and academic skills. About 40 percent have average to above average intellectual abilities.Others with autism have significant disability and are unable to live independently. About one third of people with ASD are nonverbal but can learn to communicate using other means Social Skills Your child may have problems using social skills to connect with other people. He may seem to be in his own world. It may be hard for him to
It hasn't been the easiest road. Thank god I research things and cross reference and make calls. I probably wouldn't of got any where if I didn't, People make it sound easy oh call this agency or do this and that. No not that easy. let me begin with my nephew never really got a clear diagnosis it was always guessing oh it sounds lie this oh he will grow out of it or whatever. but grow out of what and sounds like what?? whats that mean? first thing after the IEP by the school, they also do a big psych eval which is different types of testing for IQ, social emotional comprehension, etc.,,,,and thats how the IEP begins which you meet with IEP team once a year to plan the school year. Then theirs the outside professional much better than a school eval , eval, which is usually private pay sometimes the Ins company will pay, this eval gives you a diagnosis , this eval weighs more with agencies and services you might be eligible for. Then theirs the 3 year eval under the IDEA act that your child with a IEP is suppose to have done by the school it sees how far they have come its all that testing all over again. In my cAse, my nephew was due for his 3 year eval the school kept saying next year even tho I had the last eval which was over 3 years old long story short I won that bAttle. that eval is scheduled but reaching this point you feel like your not getting anywhere, you feel like I give up, you feel like how can I do this Dont give up, Im telling you, you have to know your rights there are so many agencies in each state that will help and yes its a matter of finding them. I am finally like because this Dr who is doing the eval knows a professional that we know and now someone finally knows exactly what Im looking for the questions I want answered, and what the future possible holds so this is free from the school. In the mean time all that waiting for the outside eval well I got that call just 2 days ago and they(Ins Co) approved that eval so I went from arguing for a eval to being on a waiting list to 2 evals scheduled, which is perfectly legal to do. from this I will know our next move, I think it will finally all work out
Keep everything, All communications, All emails,
Keep a notebook or a Binder, with the originals of anything you sent them or they sent you includng progress reports, report cards, Give your input dont be afraid to say whatyou think, or what you want to see, Ask questions, follow up thats there job call, write , send emails do what you have to Know the law,,,,if you dont your child could be missing out on what they are due , Im going thru this know, but I did my research and I now what the law is in regards to time frames, when things are suppose to be done When you get your draft of the IEP if something doesnt seem right or is worded wrong Dont sign it, send it back till the corrections are made then sin it,,,,I did this I noticed a mistake I asked and I was right I sent it back, they made correction sent it back to me i signed it and sent it back then got my official copy |
